STM image of six uniformly positioned heterofullerene C59N molecules, after having been individually moved from arbitrary positions on a silicon substrate. The tip of the STM - which was also used to make this image - was used to manipulate the molecules into place.
This exercise concluded that heterofullerenes have similar mechanical properties to those of fullerenes and hence, could be used to form useful structures at the nano-scale, whose positioning and electronic properties may be specified with great precision.
