SEM image of three coaxial nanostructures, which were fabricated by growing bundles of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) - approximately 250 nm in length - on a glass substrate, using a process called plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (CVD). The CNTs were then coated with metallic layers, filled with spin-on glass and polished, to open up their top ends.
These nanocoaxial structures act as subwavelength transmission lines and could thus find useful applications in nano-optics, by enabling the manipulation of visible light at the nanoscale.
