Planar chemical vapour deposition (CVD) growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), grown from an iron containing catalyst that is patterned on a silicon substrate.
CNTs are cylindrical molecules with intriguing properties which make them potentially useful in many nano-scale applications; optics and electronics being but two of these. They are incredibly strong, possess unique electrical properties and are very efficient conductors of heat.
Nanotubes form part of a structural family known as fullerenes and are so called because of their size, which is approximately 50,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair.
